Overview
The course introduces the main approaches and literature in film festival studies, the historical development of the global film festival network, and its social, cultural, political and economic contexts. Students examine festival types, programming and curatorial strategies, industry events, social impact, sustainability, accessibility and gender equality. Lithuanian festivals are analysed in comparison with international cases. The course combines lectures, seminars, case studies and the preparation of a festival funding application.
What You'll Learn
Students will understand the main areas of film festival research, the role of festivals within national and global film ecosystems, and the historical, cultural, political, social and economic contexts of their development; recognise major international and Lithuanian film festivals and assess their influence on film culture; explain the functions of different festival elements and key issues in film festival criticism; independently search for, analyse, interpret and critically evaluate information, festival data, strategies and relevant academic literature; discuss research findings in national and international contexts both orally and in writing; and apply theoretical knowledge to practical tasks.
