Overview
The course focuses on the analysis of film soundtracks, their dramaturgy, form and functions, and the relationship between sound, music and image. Students explore key principles of soundtrack development, from illustrative use of sound to contrast, and examine how different creative approaches affect the viewer. Films from different periods and countries are compared to identify trends, styles and approaches to sound. Through analysis, discussion and individual presentations, students develop critical evaluation skills and learn to present and defend their own interpretations.
What You'll Learn
Students will be able to analyse the dramaturgy, form and functions of film soundtracks and the relationship between sound, music and image; identify and explain key principles and approaches used in film sound design; compare soundtracks from different periods, countries and creative traditions; critically evaluate artistic decisions and their effect on the viewer; and independently analyse a selected film, present their interpretation and support their position with arguments.
