Overview
The course examines major movements and trends in European cinema, their historical development, aesthetic characteristics and cultural contexts. Students explore selected national cinemas, key filmmakers and films, and consider how European cinema has responded to social, political and artistic change. Particular attention is given to film analysis, comparison of different cinematic traditions and links between cinema and other arts.
What You'll Learn
Students will be able to identify and explain major movements, trends and national traditions in European cinema; understand their historical, social, cultural and political contexts; analyse and compare films, styles, genres and approaches to directing and performance; recognise relationships between European cinema and broader artistic developments; critically interpret selected films and filmmakers using relevant film analysis methods; compare developments in different national cinemas; and present informed and well-argued interpretations of European film history and culture.
